Platoon

A platoon is a military unit made up of squads. Military branches such as the army, navy, air force, and marines are divided into smaller groups. One is a platoon, part of a company made up of squads. A platoon usually has its headquarters and is under the command of a lieutenant. In a war, platoons will be stationed in places according to strategy — the platoon might be attacking or defending [Vocabulary].

A platoon is a principal subdivision of a military company, battery, or troop. Usually commanded by a lieutenant, it consists of 25 to 50 men organized into two or more sections, or squads, led by non-commissioned officers [Encyclopedia Britannica].
The platoon leader designates the main effort. He sufficiently weighs the main effort for each mission (for example, machine guns and anti-armor weapons) to ensure success [Clemson].
Platoon leaders are responsible for effectively using the platoon's resources and for employing, organizing, and directing the platoon during combat operations [Infantry Platoon tactical standing operating procedure - Clemson University, p. 3, par. 1].
