Functional style

A functional style is a system of firmly connected phonetic, linguistic, and syntactical means understood by the people who speak this language, serving a definite purpose in communication [Zunal.com].
Following I. R. Galperin, a system of interconnected language means which serves a particular aim in communication is called functional style.
Each style can be recognized by one or more significant characteristics, which are particularly noticeable. For example, using particular terminology is a linguistic feature of scientific prose.
The following main functional styles exist in English:
 The belles-lettres functional style. Substyles: verse, emotive prose, and drama.
 The publicistic functional style. Substyles: oratory, essays, articles in newspapers.
 The newspaper's functional style. Substyles: short news units, advertisements and announcements, headlines, and the editorial.
 The scientific prose style. Substyles: exact sciences, humanitarian sciences, and popular science prose.
 The official documents' functional style. Substyles: diplomatic documents, business letters, military documents, and legal papers [StudFile].
 Belles-Letters Functional Style. The function of this style is aesthetic-cognitive (cognitive on the other hand and getting pleasure on the other).
 Publicist Functional Style. This style treats particular political, social, economic, and cultural problems. Its purpose is to form the public point of view, and to convince the reader or the listener.
 Newspaper Functional Style. This style states the facts without giving any comments. The chief function of this style is to provide information to the reader.
 Scientific Prose Style. Its function is to formulate and base the theoretically objective knowledge about reality.
 Official Documents Style. Its purposes involve getting an agreement between two sides and settling the conditions of convincing two sides to an understanding. The vocabulary in this style is conservative [Acadshare].
