Synecdoche

Synecdoche is a speech device with the help of which something is referred to indirectly, by naming only a few parts or by naming some more broad entity of which it is a part. Although synecdoche is typically considered a specific kind of metonymy, it often occurs in political journalism and sports commentary and has literary uses [Baldick, p. 254-255].
Synecdoche (from Greek means ‘taking up together’) is defined as a figure of speech in which the part means the whole, and consequently, something else is recognized in the thing mentioned. For example, “bread” means the meals [Cuddon, p. 704].
Synecdoche is a figure of speech in which the part is put for the whole or the whole for the part. Synecdoche is sometimes involved in the term metonymy [Quinn, p. 405].
Synecdoche is a speech device by which a part stands for the whole, the whole for a part, the species for the genus, the genus for the species, or the name of the material for the thing made [Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary].
There are several forms of synecdoche [YourDictionary]:
 Using a part to represent a whole.
 Using a whole to represent a part.
 Using a specific class to represent a whole.
 Referencing a material to name an object
