Splitting

1. Splitting is the action of dividing or being divided into parts.
2. In quantum physics, energy level splitting or a split in an energy level of a quantum system occurs when a perturbation changes the system.

Splitting is the phenomenon, which is that the spectra of molecular crystals contain multiplets of exciton absorption bands that correspond to nondegenerate excited states of molecules. Observed in molecular crystals that contain more than one molecule in the unit cell, and is due to the interaction of these molecules with each other.
