Ionization

1. Ionization is the process by which an atom or a molecule acquires a negative or positive charge by gaining or losing electrons, often in conjunction with other chemical changes.
2. Ionization can be defined as when a neutral atom or molecule can be converted into electrically charged atoms by gaining or losing a free electron. Ionization happens during the process of a chemical reaction. To ionize an atom or a molecule, either loses or gains electrons – the electron which is either gained or lost forms an ion.

Ionization is one of the principal ways that radiation, such as charged particles and X rays, transfers its energy to matter.
In chemistry, ionization often occurs in a liquid solution. For example, neutral molecules of hydrogen chloride gas, HCl, react with similarly polar water molecules, H2O, to produce positive hydronium ions, H3O+, and negative chloride ions, Cl-. At the surface of a piece of metallic zinc in contact with an acidic solution, zinc atoms, Zn, lose electrons to hydrogen ions and become colourless zinc ions, Zn2+.
Shortly: the process of forming an ion or causing something to form an ion:
- Widespread ionization occurs readily in Earth's upper atmosphere.
- We use the term dissociation to describe the ionization of acids in water.
The act or process of ionizing something: conversion of a substance into
ions
