Electromagnet
An electromagnet is a magnet that consists of a piece of iron or steel surrounded by a coil. The metal becomes magnetic when an electric current is passed through the coil.
An electromagnet is a core of magnetic material (such as iron) surrounded by a coil of wire through which an electric current is passed to magnetize the core.
A soft metal core made into a magnet by the passage of electric current through a coil surrounding it.
Electromagnets are widely used as components of other electrical devices, such as motors, generators, electromechanical solenoids, relays, loudspeakers, hard disks, MRI machines, scientific instruments, and magnetic separation equipment. Electromagnets are also employed in industry for picking up and moving heavy iron objects such as scrap iron and steel.
