Virtual Machine
A software implementation of a computer that emulates a complete hardware system, from processor to network card, in a self-contained, isolated software environment, enabling the simultaneous operation of otherwise incompatible operating systems.
A computer that does not physically exist but is simulated by another computer. In IBM’s VM/ESA operating system, the computer simulates multiple copies of itself. A Java applet is run by a Java virtual machine, which is part of a web browser that executes Java bytecode.
