C++ is a versatile programming language developed by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1979. Based on the C programming language, C++ added some object-oriented features to the former to support modern uses.

Originally called "C with Classes," C++ is a demonstration of a programming language that, while having modern object-oriented properties, is also relatively straightforward in terms of syntax. Part of the history of C++ has to do with Stroustrup working with UNIX kernels and doing system commands. That said, C++ is useful for systems programming, but it has also been used for more abstract or "layered" types of programming, such as programming for desktop applications or video games.

C++ is currently administered by the ISO.
