Participation Barriers

Participation barriers are environmental, social, attitudinal, institutional, and physical factors that limit an individual's involvement in life situations and restrict opportunities for participation in education, community life, employment, and social relationships. Within disability research, participation barriers are understood as features of the environment that interact with personal characteristics and reduce opportunities for inclusion and engagement in meaningful activities and social roles.
