Compulsive overeating
Overeating is having too much food at once, and almost everyone has done this at some point. However, compulsive overeating is an eating disorder that has similarities with binge eating disorder. This pathological behavior is a core symptom, frequently used as diagnostic criterion, for identifying maladaptive patterns of eating behaviors observed in bulimia, binge eating disorder, and some forms of obesity as well. Psychiatric conditions, including anxiety, impaired mood, and substance-use disorders, are frequently comorbid with compulsive overeating and contribute to exacerbate the clinical profile of these patients.Recent observations suggested that brain neuroadaptations triggering compulsive overeating may resemble those found in drug addiction, in particular those underlying the hijacking of rational decision-making. With therapy, it is possible to gain control over this condition and manage the impulse to repeatedly eat excessive amounts of food.
