Emotional imbalance
Emotional imbalance refers to a state where an individual experiences difficulty in managing and regulating their emotions, leading to a disproportionate prevalence of negative emotions over positive ones. It means that you either don't allow yourself to experience your feelings, avoiding or suppressing them, or you become so attached to them and identify with them that your feelings become all-consuming.
This condition can manifest as heightened emotional reactivity, mood swings, or persistent negative emotional states, adversely affecting mental health and overall well-being. This happens when we don't allow ourselves to feel everything that comes, feeling overwhelmed or brimming with it, and accept our feelings with judgment. In this case, you should try to achieve emotional balance – the ability to not get overwhelmed by painful feelings, and cultivating a healthy relationship with your emotions. This can be done through the practice of emotional regulation, which is associated with identifying the emotions that are being felt in the moment. Emotional regulation skills include self-soothing activities that help to reduce emotional intensity and provide a calming effect.
Research indicates that sustained focus on negative assessments of life events can create a negative background and alter emotional responses to new information, contributing to emotional imbalance.
Emotional regulation is fundamental for human life and well-being, and emotions are usually in a balance between them. Negative physiological emotions are counterbalanced by positive ones, and this equilibrium is the mainstay of human physiological affective states.
Achieving emotional balance involves allowing oneself to experience emotions without suppression or overwhelming attachment, and accepting feelings without judgment. This balance is crucial for maintaining positive mental health and effective functioning in daily life.
It was also found that emotional imbalance occurs with excessive use of social media, namely, two factors are significantly influenced: feelings that arise as a reaction to the use of social media and time spent on social media, which leads to negative emotions.
Consequences:
- Potential consequences of emotional imbalance: mental health consequences: Persistent emotional imbalance often results in anxiety disorders or clinical depression, as individuals struggle to regulate overwhelming negative emotions. Chronic emotional instability can lead to burnout, characterized by feelings of exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced personal accomplishment. People with emotional imbalance are more prone to mood swings, irritability, and difficulty maintaining a consistent emotional state.
- Physical health consequences: Chronic stress caused by emotional instability has been linked to a weakened immune response, making individuals more susceptible to infections and illnesses. Emotional dysregulation, especially persistent anger or sadness, can contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease, and other cardiovascular problems. Emotional imbalance often disrupts sleep patterns, causing insomnia or hypersomnia, which further exacerbates physical and mental health problems.
- Social life consequences: Unregulated emotions can lead to conflicts, miscommunication, and difficulty maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships. Feelings of inadequacy or frustration may cause individuals to withdraw from social interactions, leading to loneliness and further emotional dysregulation.
