Somatoform disorders
Somatoform disorders – is a form of mental illness that causes one or more bodily symptoms, including pain. The symptoms may or may not be traceable to a physical cause including general medical conditions, other mental illnesses, or substance abuse. But regardless, they cause excessive and disproportionate levels of distress. The somatoform disorders are a group of psychiatric disorders that cause unexplained physical symptoms. They include somatization disorder, undifferentiated somatoform disorder, conversion disorder, pain disorder, hypochondriasis, body dysmorphic disorder, and somatoform disorder not otherwise specified. Treatment for somatoform disorders usually involves psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), to help manage the symptoms and reduce the distress they cause. In some cases, medication may also be prescribed to address any underlying anxiety or depression.
