Waypoint

A waypoint is a specified geographical location used to define an area navigation route or the flight path of an aircraft employing area navigation. Waypoints are identified as either:
1) Fly-by waypoint. A waypoint which requires turn anticipation to allow tangential interception of the next segment of a route or procedure, or
2) Flyover waypoint. A waypoint at which a turn is initiated in order to join the next segment of a route or procedure.
The most common use of a waypoint in aviation is navigational waypoints. They’re used to help aircraft operators determine their location at any time during a flight. To describe a certain waypoint, aircraft operators will use a point of longitude and latitude defined by a GPS system. These points are then used to create roadless highways in the skies to keep air traffic operating in an orderly fashion.
