Linguistic geography method

Linguistic geography is a branch of dialectology. This science studies the territorial distribution of linguistic phenomena (facts) [Лозинський, p.25].

It deals with the systematic collection of material according to a pre-compiled questionnaire in a given area, in some pre-selected points and from respondents (informants) selected according to specific criteria, as well as applying the answers to maps of linguistic (dialect) atlas [Šnur, p.4]. Linguistic geography, like any other aspect of linguistics, has synchronic and diachronic research agendas. The synchronic plan consists in studying the spatial arrangement of language phenomena of a certain chronological level; diachronic – in the study of the movement of these phenomena in time and space [Эдельман, p.3]. The purpose of linguistic geography is to determine the territory of distribution of the characteristic features of the grammatical structure, the main vocabulary, and the phonetic system of the language; establishment of differential features and boundaries of dialects and their groups; put speech features on maps using conventional signs [Жилко, pp.4-5]. The most typical objects of linguistic geography are dialects of one language or a language within a group of related languages [Лозинський, p.26].
