Set up a fire position

Set up a fire position - arrangement of a section of terrain, occupied or prepared for occupation by one or more machine guns, cannons, mortars, tanks, rocket systems of salvo fire for firing, etc. Fire positions are divided into primary, temporary and spare, respectively assigned to perform main fire tasks, partial (separate) tasks, and in case of the need to carry out a maneuver or forced abandonment of the main fire position.
To mislead the enemy regarding the number and locations of fire equipment, false firing positions were equipped. Fire positions are divided into closed ones, located behind elevation, forest, and other shelters, and open ones, designed for direct fire.
Fire positions are selected taking into account the tasks to be performed and terrain conditions, are equipped in terms of engineering, and are camouflaged.[Радянська військова енциклопедія]
Modern militaries publish and distribute elaborate field manuals for the proper construction of fire positions in stages. Initially, a shallow "shell scrape" is dug, often called a ranger grave, which provides minimal protection. Each stage develops the fighting position, gradually increasing its effectiveness while always maintaining functionality. In this way, a soldier can improve the position over time, while stopping at any time and using the position in a fight.[Forward Observer]
